Apple’s $1,999 iPhone Duo Still Shows a Crease

Apple priced the iPhone Duo, its first foldable phone, at $1,999 on September 9, 2026. The inner screen is 7.6 inches, the outer screen is 5.4 inches, and a nano-texture finish is meant to hide the fold. In event lighting the crease is still there from the side, and Apple published no figure for how many times the hinge can open.

Pre-orders start October 16. The phone goes on sale October 23, after the iPhone 18 Pro models that rose $100 the same day.

Apple Priced Its First Foldable at $1,999

The Duo is a book-style phone that closes to about the size of a passport. Opened, Apple calls it the thinnest iPhone it has made, with a Super Retina XDR inner panel that is 50 percent larger than iPhone 18 Pro Max. Closed, the cover display is 90 percent of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro, and both panels share the same aspect ratio so images do not jump when you open it.

John Ternus, Apple’s CEO, introduced the device at the Surprise and Shine event at Apple Park in Cupertino. He called it the most transformational change to iPhone since the original. The frame is grade 5 titanium in star white or night sky. Touch ID sits in the side button, and the phone can also unlock with an Apple Watch.

A dual-battery pack is rated for 31 hours of video on the inner display and 44 hours on the outer one. The A20 Pro chip, the same silicon in iPhone 18 Pro, drives both screens and sits on a vapor chamber. Later this year the Duo is due to support a USB-C Apple Pencil. It is eSIM-only worldwide.

The $1,980 Fold That Broke in Reviewers’ Hands

Samsung put the first mass-market foldable on a stage in February 2019 and priced the Galaxy Fold at $1,980. Review units failed within days. Dust got under the screen protector, the hinge left the display exposed at the top and bottom, and almost every sample showed a crease down the middle.

Samsung delayed the April 26, 2019 U.S. launch, then spent the summer on a redesign. The Fold reached stores that September. Seven years later Apple is selling a foldable that starts $19 above that first ticket, and the first argument is still the line in the glass.

Samsung already moved its main Fold to the same short, wide shape Apple wanted. The Fold 8’s inner panel is 7.6 inches, the cover is 5.5 inches, and the phone has been on sale since August 7. Apple is late to a form factor its rival just rebuilt to match it.

Hands-On Checks Still Find the Fold Line

Apple’s own copy is more careful than that quote. The nano-texture finish “minimizes crease visibility.” It does not say the crease is gone. The inner cover is a custom polymer Apple says is up to 40 percent stiffer than other foldable materials, with high-strength glass above and below the OLED and a titanium plate underneath. Custom adhesives are supposed to let those layers slide like pages in a book. A confocal laser then prints up to 25 microlayers of photopolymer on each unit to flatten leftover waviness.

After the keynote, reporters who held the phone said the fold is almost gone when you look straight on and still readable from an angle. The under-display FaceTime camera stays hidden on a bright image and shows up on a dark one. Those are day-one checks on a device that will not ship for six weeks, and creases on foldables often get easier to see after thousands of opens.

Apple’s “thinnest iPhone” line is about iPhones, not foldables as a class. The Fold 8 is 0.7 mm thinner open and Fold 8 weighs 201 grams, 53 g less than the Duo. Apple’s video numbers are higher. Samsung’s phone is already in stores, already in a passport shape, and already cheaper at list.

The price is the part that will decide volume. Foldables have stayed a thin slice of the phone market for seven years, and $1,999 is still a second phone for most households. A Fold 8 that lists $99.01 lower, weighs less, and can be bought this week is the product in the way.

$100 More for the iPhone 18 Pro

The same event raised the phones Apple actually sells in bulk. iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 and iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299, each $100 above last year’s 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max. Those two still get a variable-aperture 48MP main camera, a smaller Dynamic Island, and the same A20 Pro chip. They pre-order September 12 and go on sale September 18.

The foldable is a halo. The $100 step on Pro is the change that hits the upgrade cycle. Storage now runs to 2TB on Pro as well, so the top 18 Pro Max is $2,499, which is still $700 under the top Duo.

Wait Until October for a Phone With Two Cameras

The Duo’s rear pair is a 48MP Fusion Main with an optical-quality 2x crop and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide that does macro. There is no dedicated telephoto. The cover has a 12MP Center Stage camera. The inner FaceTime camera sits under the display. 4K at 120 fps in Dolby Vision is available on the main camera, and the phone can stand on its edges for time-lapse without a tripod.

NEW SHOTS THE HINGE UNLOCKS

• Smart Take: On-device models watch the scene and fire when people are posed, so the photographer can get in the frame.
• Duo Preview: The outer screen shows the live view so the subject can check framing.

Accessories are a two-part case at $79 and a folio with a kickstand at $129. Monthly, Apple lists $83.29 over 24 months, or $57.99 a month on Apple Upgrade. A second wave of 28 countries and regions gets the phone October 30.
