The US iPhone 18 Pro Max Still Runs a Qualcomm Radio

Apple’s C2 modem now does US mmWave, but the US iPhone 18 Pro Max remains the leftover Qualcomm radio, mapped to last year’s X80 chip.

Apple’s US spec sheet names the C2 cellular modem on iPhone 18 Pro and leaves it off iPhone 18 Pro Max. International Max pages still list C2, so the American large phone is the odd radio in a lineup that otherwise left Qualcomm behind.

Both US sizes still get mmWave 5G. The split is the chip that talks to the tower, and Apple has not said why the home-market Max is the one unit that kept a Snapdragon baseband.

Apple Leaves C2 Off the US Pro Max Specs

The September 9, 2026 “Surprise and Shine” event put C2 on stage with iPhone 18 Pro. The US C2 under the smaller Pro only listing is the tell. The Pro Max block repeats 5G, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread, then never names C2.

Mark Gurman wrote that the 18 Pro Max sticks with Qualcomm after reading that US sheet on launch day. Replies immediately produced UK screenshots that still named C2 on the Max, which is how the argument started as a page bug rather than a hardware split.

By September 13, Apple’s European pages listed C2 on both Pro sizes. The US sheet did not catch up. The German-language newsroom copy even introduces C2 on iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max together, while the US newsroom sentence attaches the chip to iPhone 18 Pro.

iPhone 18 Pro introduces C2, Apple’s next-generation cellular modem system, which brings AI-powered improvements to cellular quality and reliability. C2 delivers meaningfully faster uploads when compared to C1X while consuming 15 percent less energy, and now supports mmWave in the U.S.

That mmWave line is the twist. C1 and C1X never did those US high bands. C2 does, and it is already in the smaller US Pro sitting next to the Max that still uses Qualcomm.

The 2023 Deal Now Covers One American Size

On September 11, 2023, Qualcomm said it would supply Snapdragon 5G systems through 2026 for Apple smartphone launches in 2024, 2025, and 2026. At the time, the chipmaker’s working figure for 2026 iPhones was about 20 percent of the mix, down from nearly every iPhone in earlier years.

QUALCOMM’S SHRINKING IPHONE SLICE

  • 2023 plan: Snapdragon 5G Modem-RF systems for iPhone launches in 2024, 2025, and 2026.
  • Old 2026 share: Qualcomm had modeled about 20 percent of that year’s iPhones.
  • July 29 cut: CEO Cristiano Amon said the actual slice would land well below 20 percent, and CFO Akash Palkhiwala called it materially lower.
  • Revenue hit: Amon said Apple-product chip revenue would fall about 50 percent from the September quarter to the December quarter.

Amon blamed availability of supply, not a clause that forced Apple to keep buying a set number of radios. That undercuts the neat story that the US Max exists to honor a minimum order. If Qualcomm’s share is shrinking faster than planned, Apple is taking even fewer Snapdragon units, not stretching to hit 20 percent.

The leftover is still real. C2 is in iPhone 18 Pro worldwide, in iPhone 18 Pro Max outside the United States, and in the folding iPhone Duo in every country. The US Pro Max is the socket that did not convert.

Firmware IDs Point to Last Year’s X80

Launch write-ups guessed Qualcomm’s current Android flagship, the Snapdragon X85. Device identifiers say otherwise. The US Pro Max is iPhone19,3, model A3473, with an SDX80M baseband. That is the same Qualcomm family Apple used in iPhone 17 Pro, not the newer X85.

International Pro Max units are iPhone19,7, models A3716, A3717, and A3718, with a C2 baseband. A leaked US bill of materials from earlier in the year already listed SDX80M plus Qualcomm RF parts such as the SDR875 transceiver, which matches the identifier table now sitting in software.

So the American Max is not getting a one-year bump to Qualcomm’s latest radio. It is carrying last year’s modem into a phone whose smaller sibling already moved to Apple silicon. Until teardowns open a US unit, SDX80M is the working ID, and X85 is the chip this SKU did not get.

What C2 Adds on the Phones That Got It

Apple’s first in-house modem, C1, landed in iPhone 16e in February 2025. C1X followed in iPhone Air in September 2025 and in iPhone 17e in March 2026. Apple said C1X was up to 2x faster than C1, used 30 percent less energy for the same cellular work, and was the most power-efficient modem it had put in an iPhone. It still lacked mmWave.

C2 is the flagship step. Apple has not published peak download or upload numbers for it. The claims that shipped on September 9 are AI tuning for quality and reliability, 15 percent less energy than C1X, meaningfully faster uploads, and US mmWave.

WHERE C2 ACTUALLY SHIPS

  • iPhone 18 Pro: C2 in every country, including the United States.
  • iPhone 18 Pro Max: C2 everywhere except the United States.
  • iPhone Duo: C2 worldwide, including US mmWave on American units.
  • US iPhone 18 Pro Max: Qualcomm SDX80M, the holdout SKU.

Wi-Fi is not part of the split. Both Pro sizes use Apple’s N1 chip for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread, plus a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip. The radio that changes by country and by size is the cellular modem only.

Two US Model Numbers, One Extra LTE Band

The US spec sheet lists two cellular configurations that look almost identical until the LTE row. Model A3472, the C2 phone, adds LTE band 106. Model A3473, the Qualcomm Max, does not. Both list 5G mmWave bands n258, n260, and n261, and both claim 5G and Gigabit LTE with 4×4 MIMO.

THE THREE IPHONE 18 PRO RADIOS

Phone Modem US mmWave LTE band 106 Model IDs
iPhone 18 Pro (US) Apple C2 Yes (n258, n260, n261) Yes A3472
iPhone 18 Pro Max (US) Qualcomm SDX80M Yes (n258, n260, n261) No A3473
iPhone 18 Pro Max (outside US) Apple C2 Not listed C2 hardware A3716, A3717, A3718

International C2 phones still do not ship as a single global radio. Apple kept mmWave as a US antenna package, so a Max bought abroad can have C2 and still miss n258, n260, and n261 when it roams into an American mmWave cell.

Battery ratings on the US sheet are the same for both radios because Apple does not break modem draw out of the total. iPhone 18 Pro is rated up to 24 hours of typical use and 36 hours of video playback. iPhone 18 Pro Max is rated up to 30 hours typical and 45 hours of video. Those figures sit on a 6.3-inch, 211-gram Pro and a 6.9-inch, 249-gram Max, both with the A20 Pro chip, so they are not a C2 versus X80 test.

Buyers Who Want C2 Can Skip the Bigger Phone

The practical fork is now size versus silicon. The Max still has the larger panel and the longer video rating. The smaller Pro is the US phone that actually got the new modem, including the first Apple radio that speaks mmWave on Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile high-band sites.

Shoppers who had picked the Max for battery and then saw C2 locked to the Pro are already treating the smaller phone as the radio upgrade. That is a reasonable read of the spec sheets. It is also untested. No independent upload, range, or cellular-battery comparison has shipped, and Apple did not quote a C2 speed.

Repair and resale will feel the split before most reviews do. A US Max is a different baseband from a Pro, and a different baseband from a Max bought in Europe. Same trade name, three radios, and a spare-parts map that now cares which country printed the box.

iOS 27 arrives on September 14, 2026 with smarter Wi-Fi-to-cellular handoffs on older iPhones too, so software will not be the thing that makes A3473 match A3472. The US Pro Max is the new phone that still talks to the network through Qualcomm, parked beside a cheaper, smaller Pro that already does not.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the US iPhone 18 Pro use Apple’s C2 modem?

Yes. The US iPhone 18 Pro is the C2 model, and it shares Apple’s N1 Wi-Fi 7 chip with the Pro Max, so the country split is cellular hardware only, not wireless LAN or Bluetooth.

Will a non-US iPhone 18 Pro Max get US mmWave 5G?

No. International C2 Max units drop mmWave bands n258, n260, and n261, and many also omit T-Mobile’s 600 MHz n71 and AT&T FirstNet n14, so they are a poor roam-in-America substitute even though they have C2.

What is LTE band 106 on the C2 US model?

Band 106 is a 900 MHz LTE slice only about 5 MHz wide, written for private utility and industrial networks, and it is the one listed cellular extra on C2 model A3472 that Qualcomm model A3473 does not advertise.

When does Apple’s Qualcomm modem supply agreement end?

The chip-supply pact Qualcomm announced on September 11, 2023 covers iPhone launches in 2024, 2025, and 2026, while a separate patent-licensing deal with Apple runs through March 2027.

Does iPhone Duo use the C2 modem in the United States?

Yes. iPhone Duo uses C2 worldwide, it is eSIM-only in every country, and Apple rates video playback at up to 31 hours on the inner display, with the same C2 efficiency pitch used on iPhone 18 Pro.
