Pros and Cons of Having a Corn Snake as a Pet

Corn snakes are a modestly sized constrictor from the SouthEastern US. They are also known as popular pets for a variety of homes. As with any pet, you need to consider that this animal has its own unique needs before bringing it home. It might even be fairly different from any other pet you’ve owned. To help determine if a corn snake is right for your home, here are some of the pros and cons of owning them.

Pros

Awesome Temperaments

While society may have conditioned you to see snakes as frightening, aggressive animals, the reality is that you would have difficulty finding a more low key, chill pet. A healthy, well socialized corn snake should be totally relaxed and calm when in your presence or being handled.

Minimal Social Needs

One aspect of corn snake ownership that many people enjoy is their general lack of “neediness”. While you run the risk of a dog or cat becoming distressed at the prospect of you being gone for hours or days, a corn snake will be happy to hunker down and relax in that time. You don’t need to constantly give them attention, take them for walks, or train them.

No Grooming Required

Some people spend hundreds of dollars maintaining their pet’s coat and skin. Snakes, as you may have noticed, don’t quite have any fur to brush, wash, or clip. The occasional bath to assist in shedding their skin will be all they need.

Long Lifespans

If you are looking for a pet that can be by your side for decades, corn snakes are an excellent option. These animals can live for 20+ years in captivity, and are known to be fairly healthy.

Cons

Not Always Affectionate

While many people see the general “hands off” nature of corn snakes as a benefit, many people prefer a more interactive pet. New corn snake owners may be surprised to see that their pet isn’t necessarily seeking out interaction. Our best advice is to simply not treat your snake like a cat or dog.

Can be Hard to Find a Vet

While many homes in the US are finding out about how corn snakes can make wonderful pets, they are still far outranked by other domestic animals in terms of popularity. Because of this, it can be somewhat difficult to find a quality exotic vet with the experience and credentials to take care of your animal. And they may be somewhat more expensive than your typical veterinarian.

Can be Escape Artist

Corn snakes are known for their love of exploration. Because of this, they have gained a bit of a reputation as escape artists, taking advantage of any possible weakness in their tank to run free. However, as long as you take the proper precautions (using lid clamps or locks), your slithery friend should remain safe and contained.

Wrapping Up

There are benefits and drawbacks to owning any animal. If you are looking for corn snakes for sale, it is important to remember that you are considering taking on the responsibility for a live animal with a variety of needs. However, as long as you do your research beforehand, you will be prepared to provide your snake with a quality, long life.
